evaluation question 4

The hardware I used in the preproduction of my product for both my foundation and advanced portfolio includes the following;
  • filming camera
  • tablet/iPad
  • tripod
  • iMac
  • computer
  • USB stick
  • SD card
  • card reader
 The software programmes I used in the preproduction of my product for both my foundation and advanced portfolio includes the following;
  • Blogger
  • publisher
  • Photoshop
  • word
  • PowerPoint
  • YouTube
  • final cut
  • picmonkey

In the production of my foundation portfolio I now find that I had limited knowledge in terms of how to use media technology both hardware and software. For example I didn't know how to use Photoshop properly and struggled with following the conventions of a basic music magazine and used basic camera angles which made the pictures I took look blurry. I didn't have much experience with using proper cameras and iMac's. However, in my advanced portfolio pre production I gained more knowledge about a variety of software programmes I can used to help me edit my product and how to represent it on my blog. These software programmes include; Final cut, Picmonkey and YouTube. I have struggled to get use to final cut and the different tools to help edit the music video however I quickly learnt how to use it correctly even though it took me 3 hours to edit and make my music video in total. When it came to making my ancillary texts however, I needed a bit of help due to the fact I still can't use an iMac very well therefore it took a bit more time to make these products, also waiting for my video to upload onto YouTube took a long while so I spend a long time waiting for it to finish but for this happen I accidently forget to remove the SD card before I started doing my editing and once I had finished and removed the card, the files were lost so I had to use a card reader to find the files again and wait for it to re-upload to YouTube. In the foundation portfolio preproduction I had to change my ideas of the layout of my music magazine because I didn't conform to the conventions of a folk genre music magazine. I was unconfident with using Photoshop therefore all my original mock ups were messy with badly cropped pictures and with random structure to them,

evaluation question 3

Social media question results (Facebook) ;

What is your personal opinion of my final music video?

You have some good ideas and shots in your music video but it is too dark too see anything, if you could change it I would say film it in the daylight rather than the dark - Carrie 33

I like the music video but I wish I could of helped you out and have been in it! - Tom 14

Your music video isn't the best thing you made but I do like the theme of zombies, it really does give the music video a different perspective -  Natalie 18

I love the song, it's amazing! The music video is a bit dark but I think it's really good! - George 21

What should I do to improve my product?

Defintely film during the daylight! And use a different locations so you can film more! - Charmaine 13

Use more close ups, so we can see the characters expressions more clearly and for your ancillary texts add more to the poster - Carrie 33

Put more of me in it! Nah just do it in daylight so it isn't so blurry and unclear - Archie 16

Do you think my product challenges the conventions of an Indie rock music video well?

Yes definitely! I don't know any other  Indie rock music videos that have zombies in them! LOL! - Carrie 33

Yes it does Lauren, really well. You used your imagination well it shows your creativity through the plot of the music video! - Natalie 18

Yeah I think so.. It just seems really different to other types of music videos.- Tom 14

Well it has that alternative style about it, so yeah! - Charmaine 13

Would you buy the album after looking at the digipack and poster?

Yeah I guess so.. It looks really cool - Tom 14

Yes! Why not? I love song and the digi pack looks really interesting so I would check it out - George 21

Yeah I like it, I'd buy it - Archie 16

Do you think the name of the band I chose links well with the genre of music?

Yep. It's a peculiar name, goes with a strange music video - Peter 17

God yeah! That is such a good idea for a band name - Lucy 15

It's not too original I guess.. - George 21

The name really stands out to me! - Sharon 41

From the feedback I received through social media, it concludes that over all the name for the name appeals more to those who prefer the alternative style of music, this also includes the digi pack and poster. My music video plot challenges the conventions of an indie rock genre well and includes a horror type theme cross over in the video. The style of the ancillary texts seem to attract a younger teenage audience rather than young adults however that age category tend to like alternative music more than younger teens.

evaluation question 2

The feedback I got from my target market;

"The video looks good however it is a bit too dark to see what is happening in the music video , digi pack looks okay however the poster could do with some more text and detail, doesn't look so inviting" - My mother 41

"I love the song by Greenday and I like the dark setting in the music video, it gives an eerie vibe to the music video. Plus I had fun getting to dress up part of it" - cadet 12

"Could do with better lighting, you can't see much in the music video but the digi pack looks good with the layout looks mysterious and spooky" - friend 17

"Overall some more work and effort could have been put into the blog but however the final products don't look so bad" - friend 24

From the feed back I got I understand that I could have changed my product by filming in the daylight where it is easier to see what happens in music videos, I understand that if I could redo this, that I would have changed the time of filming so that it was lighter and made the camera angles more steady so that the focus wasn't so blurry. I used continuity editing to help give my advanced portfolio structure during the production however I mainly used montage editing that which went well changing the clip I had filming to the diegetic music. I used the editing technique to link/change clip with the music to show the different scenarios in the short film like music video I made for my final product. If I was able to make amendments to my final product, I would change the location of where I filmed from a army cadet detachment to a wide open are such the Beverley Westwood which wouldn't restrict my use of land and area because I would be able to create different scenes and edit it differently to show the changed in each clip of my music video, also I would be able to use a lot more different camera angles. I would still challenge the conventions of an Indie rock music video because I liked the idea of using different themes from films for different genres of music which often crossed/clashed together.

evaluation question 1

In both existing products I have chosen to use an alternative indie/folk type theme/genre to my products. In my foundation portfolio I chose to make a folk magazine that conformed to the conventions of a music magazine. However in my advanced portfolio after researching the conventions of indie rock music videos I decided to challenge the conventions of for my product after doing textual analysis research.  In my foundation portfolio I created a still image music magazine front cover, context page and double page spread. In the foundation portfolio my knowledge of cinematography and camera angles was limited, therefore I only took medium close ups for my product, as I progressed onto the advanced portfolio my knowledge was expended on how to be creative with different camera angles and shots therefore I used these in the production of my final product. The narrative of my advance portfolio product becomes abstract as I did not use any performance clips of the pre-production, I decided that to challenge the conventions I would use my imagination and not use lip synchronizing or singing clips like the original music video by green day.  I had to change my idea for my final product because I could not use the same characters or story line that I had planned to for my mock piece. However, this allowed me to expand my creativity in the use of mise-en-scene for my next story line of an apocalypse setting.  I used montage editing for my advanced portfolio product so whenever the beat of the song changed, the clips of the music video linked in with the lyrics. At some parts of the song the antagonist looks as though the song is reflecting her thoughts and feelings at that time in the music video, I intended on this whilst editing my video so that the lyrics linked in with the emotions of the main character. In my still image product however, I conformed to the conventional colours of a folk music magazine orange and brown, In comparison to my still image product I have been more creative with my product and challenged the stereotypical indie rock band type video by turning my music video into a short film to go with the diegetic sound of my chosen song. I can see that I have progressed by looking at my still image because the foundation product looks more bland and plain compared to my advanced product.

Textual analysis 2

The Foo Fighters
Foo Fighters is an American rock band, formed in Seattle in 1994. It was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl as a one-man project following the death of Kurt Cobain and the resulting dissolution of his previous band. The group got its name from the UFO's and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied Aircraft pilots in WW2, which were known collectively as "Foo fighters".

Textual analysis 1

The music genre of my chosen music video; indie rock

 Nirvana

Forms and conventions

Nirvana are known for their Indie rock genre music which has been going for the past 29 years. Like Greenday they have their audience has expectations in the music that they produce and to the behaviour they display in their music video's. Nirvana conforms with the conventions of an Indie rock band as they use anything from heavy metal musical instruments to basic electrical guitars and the vary from singing in

mellow tones to screaming and singing aggressively during their recordings or performing live. The band's name itself comes from a Buddhist term which refers to the imperturbable stillness of mind after the fires of desire, aversion, and delusion have been finally extinguished. Nirvana represented the leading edge of a movement born in the sub-basement of  the 1970s punk and the 1980s underground. Kurt Cobain said that Nirvana used dynamic shifts that went from quiet to loud and that the band seeked to produce a mixture of heavy and pop musical sounds. Like Greenday, Kurt Cobain the lead singer and guitarist of Nirvana wrote and sung is own songs.
